The word « Autodafé » comes from Portuguese and translates as « act of faith ». It describes a public penance ceremony organized by the Spanish or Portuguese Inquisition Tribunal during which the judgment of the accused - usually death sentence by burning - was proclaimed. The first Auto-da-Fe took place in Seville in Spain in 1481. The expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492 by the decree of the Alhambra of the Catholic queen Isabella of Castile and King Ferdinand II of Aragon, convinced by the Grand Inquisitor Torquemada, forced the Jews who had remain there to convert or to die. Those who had gone into exile in Portugal were then expelled by King Manuel I in 1497. Under the Inquisition, the Auto-da-Fe ceremony was a large public event,
taking place in the presence of high-ranking spectators, even monarchs. It consisted of a long procession made up of members of the Church and penitents, followed by a solemn mass, a trial, an oath of obedience to the Inquisition, a sermon and the reading of sentences. The accused persons had to show their good faith (act of faith - auto-da-fe), to confess and to do penance. The accused were most often former Jewish converts (forcibly) suspected of practicing Judaism.
