In the taste of the productions of James COX (c.1723-1 800). Vienna (Austria) control marks, 1872-1901. H_10 cm L_4,5 cm Gross weight : 161,77 g. History: In the 1760s, English silversmiths offered all sorts of boxes containing toiletries, perfume bottles, writing cases, pocket watches and objects of all kinds such as ours. Sometimes made of enamel, they are most often plated with hard stone; agate, grey, brown or red is the stone generally used. In the years 1766-1772, the workshop of James Cox, in London, specialized in the manufacture of this kind of objects, often not punched, which obtained a great success and brought him fortune before being forced to bankruptcy in 1788 following bad business. The examples preserved in museums around the world give an idea of the importance and luxury of the production of these various London workshops, for these objects of virtue destined above all for export: France, Russia, China, India or Turkey.
