JACQUES MONORY (1924-2018)
Toxique n° 19, Toto, 1983 Oil and collage on canvas. Signed, dated and titled on the reverse. Oil and collage on canvas. Signed, dated and titled on the reverse. H_160 cm W_180 cm Provenance: - galerie Claude Heytens - acquired in this gallery by the present owner - private collection Jacques Monory From 1963 onwards, something opens up... it starts to move with great enthusiasm... Objects, starting with the gun, animals, starting with cats, faces, starting with those of his wife and son, landscapes, but as if in the process of tipping over, appear as such on the canvas, appearing within a sort of emulsion or spinning that they will eventually dissolve. Monochrome rendering and photographic realism are not yet fully there, it is rather as if we see them making their way through a kind of intimate and dreamlike carousel. Very often, the eye itself, the gaze, is represented, as if it were a question of re-establishing the right of gaze of painting on the things of the world by painting the organ of sight. The box of a giant puzzle with scattered pieces has opened before Monory, and what he paints then is this irruption, this disorder, which he mimics through systems of juxtaposition or shuffled cards, or sometimes even by bursting the surface of the painting. It is by crossing a universe of mirrors, cracks, splinters, filled with women, soft and even languid gestures, where the amateur could detect fetishistic traces, that Monory left his studio. These themes or erotic, dreamy, dilated accents will never be abandoned, but they will be intermingled with others, and above all with images from current events, to form a kind of day-to-day autobiography, a long, unhinged diary in which the solitude of the painter-narrator is as if bombarded by the world's torn appearances.
