Robert Indiana "I was the least Pop of all the Pop artists" Robert Indiana is an American Pop artist who draws his inspiration from the typography he sees on signs, billboards and logos. He is best known for his LOVE, with its bold stacked letters titled O, which appeared on a postage stamp in 1973 and in numerous steel sculptures around the world. Born Robert Earl Clark on September 13, 1928 in New Castle, Indiana, Indiana took his state name as a pseudonym and, after his military service, he took classes to finish his bachelor's degree at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1954. Later that year, he moved to New York, then traveled and studied in Europe. On the advice of Ellsworth Kelly, he moved to Lower Manhattan and Manhattan and became close to other great artists such as Agnes Martin, Jack Youngerman and James Rosenquist. In the 1960s, Indiana began painting simple words, often consisting of three or four letters, and produced the works for which he is best known. In September 2013, the Whitney Museum of American Art hosted the first retrospective of his work in New York. The artist lives and works in Vinalhaven, Maine.
