Pair of important black patina bronze door... - Lot 67 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
Pair of important black patina bronze door handles representing busts of soldiers in the antique style. Head wearing a helmet with a dolphin's head, a lippled face with a blunt nose, a breastplate decorated with a Gorgon's head. Venice, attributed to Nicolò II de' Conti (Venice, ca. 1530 - 1601), ca. 1550/60 Heights: 20.3 cm and 20.6 cm Book consulted: G. Gentilini, Scultura italiana del Rinascimento, Giorgio Baratti Gallerie, Florence, 2013, cat.15. Alfonso Alberghetti, a member of a great family of Venetian artillery makers, shared premises with Nicolò de' Conti in the state foundries of the Serenissima Arsenale around the middle of the 16th century. These two master founders left numerous bronze works that can still be seen in the city, including the two imposing well copings in the courtyard of the Ducal Palace. The sculptures of these monumental works are attributed to Nicolò. Art historians also attribute to his very inventive imagination these door handles with their grotesque faces, which corresponded well to the taste for the bizarre carried by the mannerist current of the time.
