Fragment of a tapestry known as cabbage leaf... - Lot 73 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
Fragment of a tapestry known as cabbage leaf or aristolochia in wool and silk. Decorated with a deer, two birds on a background of large leaves and flowering shrubs; background with a village on the edge of a forest and hills in the distance; borders of leaves and fruit. Ateliers de la Marche, last third of the 16th century Height: 251 cm - Width: 152 cm (restorations, in particular a fragment reinstated in the lower left corner, borders added) Book consulted: D. Chevalier, P. Chevalier and P.F. Bertrand, Les tapisseries d'Aubusson et de Felletin, Paris, 1988, p 26 and 27. This tapestry is related to the productions of the workshops of the Marche. Indeed, we find there animals standing out on a green background with large and vigorous cut out leaves, of a tender green and a deep blue contrasting with the peaceful countryside of the upper part. A tapestry preserved in the castle of Trémolière in the Cantal shows a similar juxtaposition (fig.).
