Silver plate representing Christ led before... - Lot 74 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
Silver plate representing Christ led before Herod. Marks of the pine cone and of the master goldsmith CL . Striche on the reverse. Copy of an original plate by Christoph Lenker (active from 1575 to 1610). Modern cast iron Height : 15,7 cm - Width : 12 cm - Weight : 440 g Sales label on the reverse side bearing the number 1253 Works consulted : Sale Frankfurt am Main, G. Habich, L. Hamburger, Sammlung Geheimrat Hermann Vogel, 4 November 1924, lot 203 ; I. Weber, Deutsche Niederländische und Französische Renaissanceplaketten 1500-1650, Munich, 1975, S.33. This plate is a fine reproduction of a work by the renowned south German silversmith Christoph Lencker, which bears the Augsburg mark of the years 1610-13. Bronze examples, sometimes in silver, are occasionally found on the art market. For example, an early bronze cast from Lencker's workshop sold for €2,300 in the Piasa sale of 8 June 2012, lot 140. A silver plate similar in weight to this one, belonging to the Alfred Walcher Ritter von Molthein collection, appeared in the referenced sale of 30 March 1998 at the Dorotheum Palace in Vienna; it was presented as period and with excellent chasing. The numbered label 1253, visible here on the back of the plate, corresponding to the lot in the Vienna sale, has been placed to cause confusion. Nevertheless, it is a beautiful document.
