MAMLUK DOOR LEAF. Engraved wood inlaid with... - Lot 75 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
MAMLUK DOOR LEAF. Engraved wood inlaid with ivory. This door leaf has a three-registered decoration of assembled polygons. In the upper and lower parts, rectangular panels decorated with palmettes ending in trefoils, inscribed in lattices and framed by a vegetal frieze. The central panel is made up of polygons, usually diamond-shaped, surrounded by fine ivory or bone fillets, some with engraved decoration. The decoration on this type of panel, of which there are many examples in the Louvre's collections, is most often organised around radiating stars. The decoration that appears fragmentary here was probably reassembled in the 19th century in a resinous wood frame. Egypt, 14th-15th century, Mamluk period, probably reassembled in the 19th century.
