Stéphane MALLARME.
Les Poésies de S. Mallarmé. Frontispiece by F. Rops. Brussels, Edmond Deman, 1899. In-4: midnight blue morocco, richly decorated ribbed spine with mosaic red calf parts, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, gold filleted edges, inner morocco frames decorated with four gilt fillets and a gilt roulette, beige silk lining and endpapers, gilt edges on witnesses, ornamented cover and spine preserved, case (A. & R. Maylander). Collective edition, partly original, printed in an edition of 600 copies. The frontispiece is decorated with a drypoint heliogravure by Félicien Rops: La grande lyre, about which Mallarmé wrote to the artist: "This frontispiece, one of your pure works and my constant admiration, is, in my opinion, inseparable from the humble text it decorates, or at least gives it such an honour." One of the first 50 copies reprinted on imperial paper from Japan (No. 45). Long epistolary exchanges between Mallarmé and the publisher Deman, from 1891 to 1898, show how much the author cared about the material presentation of his poetic work. Edmond Deman (1857-1918), the great Brussels master of publishing for bibliophiles, endured the procrastination of the perfectionist without flinching. Mallarmé died on 9 September 1898 without having seen the volume he had so much dreamed of. To the texts of the photolithographed collective edition of 1887 (45 copies) are added his last retouching and fourteen new pieces. (Adrienne Fontainas, Edmond Deman, éditeur de Mallarmé, Vulaines, 1999, pp. 13-18). The two-tone ornamented cover was designed by the painter Theo Van Rysselberghe, who is not mentioned in the book. A fine copy. Restoration to the corner of the upper cover.
