Georges SAND.
[No place or date [1858]. Autograph manuscript signed twelve times of 221 leaves written on the front, in-8: green morocco, smooth spine richly decorated, framed with gilt filets and cold rolled with fleurons in the corners, inner lace, untrimmed (Semet et Plumelle). Important collection of eleven Légendes rustiques: autograph manuscript signed twelve times. "It would be necessary to find a name for this unnamed poem of universal fabulosity or marvellousness, whose origins go back to the appearance of man on earth, and whose versions, multiplied ad infinitum, are the expression of the poetic imagination of all times and all peoples" (Foreword). This collection of legends from Berry was proposed by Maurice Sand to the publisher A. Morel: on May 28, 1858, they signed a contract for "a deluxe album, folio format, representing Berry legends, entitled Croyances et Superstitions populaires". George Sand did not like the title and replaced it with Légendes rustiques. She completed the manuscript on July 30. The work was illustrated by Maurice Sand in October 1858. Beautiful manuscript in blue ink with numerous erasures and corrections: each text, including the Foreword, is signed at the end. The set includes the Foreword and eleven of the twelve published texts: Lubins and Lupins has not been retained. There are: Foreword (pp. 1-12) 1. Les Pierres-Sottes (pp. 13-30: two original titles crossed out, including: Les pierres-caillasses folles). 2. Les Demoiselles (pp. 31-51) 3. Les Laveuses de nuit ou Lavandières (pp. 52-69) 4. The Great Beast (pp. 70-89) 5. The Three Men of Stone (pp. 90-107) 6. Le Follet de la Pierre d'Epnell (pp. 108-126) 7. The Woodcutter (pp. 127-146) 8. The Meneu' of Wolves (pp. 147-164) 9. The Lupeux (pp. 165-183) 10. The Monk of the Smooth Ponds (pp. 184-201) 11. The Flambettes (pp. 202-221). The manuscript was exhibited at the Bibliothèque nationale in 1977 (George Sand, Visages du Romantisme, no. 539). From the library of Colonel Daniel Sickles (II, 1989, no. 502).
