Auguste de VILLIERS DE L'ISLE-ADAM.
Contes cruels. Paris, Calmann Lévy, 1883. In-12 of (2) ff. 352 pp. in jansenist red morocco, spine ribbed, decorated edges, inner lace, gilt edges on witnesses, cover and spine preserved, case (Yseux). First edition printed on white wove paper (no deluxe edition). The collection of twenty-eight tales is the first literary success of the cursed poet. Remy de Gourmont was to celebrate its historical importance: "Having read them, young people felt troubled. Around the same time, Sagesse had been known and Mallarmé discovered. À rebours completed the harvest by providing the link." A fine copy, from the Henri Thuile library, with bookplate. (Bibliothèque nationale, En français dans le texte, 1990, no. 310.- Connolly, One Hundred Modern Books, 1880- 1950, no. 3.)
