[POSTER]. International Surrealist Exhibition.... - Lot 108 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
[POSTER]. International Surrealist Exhibition. New Burlington Galleries, June 12th to July 4th. London, The Euston Press, [1936]. Illustrated poster printed in black on a pink and white background (76 x 51 cm). Poster for the famous International Exhibition of Surrealism in London in 1936. It is illustrated at the top with a reproduction of a composition by Max Ernst. Remarkable exhibition of nearly four hundred works of art by artists of fourteen nationalities, the first ever of the International Exhibitions of Surrealism and the only one held in London: it was organized by Roland Penrose with the help of Herbert Read, Paul Nash and Henry Moore, assisted by E.L.T. Mesens. On June 16 Breton gave the lecture "Non-border limits of Surrealism". On the 19th, a reading by Herbert Read, "Art and the Unconscious" and on June 24 Paul Eluard gave a lecture on "La poésie surréaliste". Finally, on 1 July, dressed as a diver, Dalí spoke on "Authentic Paranoid Ghosts". In September of the same year the first English Surrealist magazine appeared, which was the fourth issue of the International Bulletin of Surrealism. Then E.L.T. Mesens became director of the London Gallery, editor of the London Bulletin. Very rare. Some restoration in the margins, including a filled-in gap in the lower left margin, without affecting the text. (The poster is reproduced full-page in the exhibition catalogue E.L.T. Mesens' Alphabet of Stars, Dada and Surrealism. Mesens, Dada and Surrealism in Brussels, Paris and London, Ostend, Mu.Zee, 2013, p. 162, no. 243, and used with a photo montage for the cover).
