Guillaume APOLLINAIRE [et René DALÍZE].
The Rome of the Borgias. Pope Alexander VI between his mistress and his two sons Caesar and Lucretia - The Bride of Jesus Christ - Cardinal's Orgies - Poison and Incest - The Underworld of Borgia Rome. Book decorated with ten illustrations out of text. Paris, Bibliothèque des Curieux, 1913. In-12: paperback, illustrated cover. First edition. One of the first 10 copies on Japan paper (nº 3). Note by Guillaume Apollinaire printed at the head: "The manuscript of the Rome of the Borgias, which is a fictional history, was given to us by the widow of an illustrious historian, with the aim of publishing the work and concealing the name of the author. In fact, the book was written by his friend René Dalíze (1879-1917). Eric Dussert has devoted a chapter of Une forêt cachée to this "poet of good hair, quick feet and good humour", to the man with whom Apollinaire founded Les Soirées de Paris (1912), whom he referred to in Alcools as "the oldest of my comrades" and to whom his Calligrammes would be dedicated Dussert reports that Dalíze "introduced Max Jacob, André Salmon and Pablo Picasso and Apollinaire, who was his friend, [.. a substance that was to become a rage far beyond the small world of Montmartre: opium." René Dalíze was killed in front of Craonne, on May 7, 1917. Very nice copy preserved as issued. (Dussert, Une forêt cachée, 156 portraits d' écrivains oubliés, 2013, pp. 285-287.- Laurence Campa, Apollinaire, p. 424: "Apollinaire owed it entirely to Dalíze; he admitted it with his lips to Gourmont, by offering him an unsigned copy.")
