GUILLAUME APOLLINAIRE.
Vitam Impendere Amori. Drawings and poems. Paris, Mercure de France, 1917. In-8: half black morocco, smooth spine, vellum boards with title in gilt on the first framed by a black morocco band and a gilt fillet, gilt head (Pierre-Lucien Martin, 1956). Set of highly corrected proofs: one of the poems is entirely autograph. Of the six poems that make up the collection, distributed here in a different order from the printed volume, some have variants. "These melancholy and tender quatrains, where the tragic always seems close to emerging under the lightness of images and song, are among the purest verses Apollinaire has written" (Marcel Adéma and Michel Decaudin, Oeuvres poétiques de Guillaume Apollinaire, Pléiade, p. 1064). The collection, illustrated with eight black compositions by André Rouveyre, was published in 1917, with 215 copies printed.
