André BRETON.
Le Surréalisme et la Peinture with seventy-seven photographs from Max Ernst, Giorgio de Chirico, Joan Miró, Georges Braque, Arp, Francis Picabia, Pablo Picasso, Man Ray, André Masson, Yves Tanguy. Paris, NRF, 1928. In-4: paperback. Black half calf slipcase, smooth spine, by Devauchelle. First edition. It is illustrated with 77 black and white reproductions of works of art pasted on leaves: of the ten painters listed in the title, Pablo Picasso and Giorgio de Chirico are the most reproduced, with fifteen works each. One of 12 copies on Pannekoek Holland paper, this one out of trade. "Often vibrating with the lyrical style of happy exploration, the text makes Breton's seizures in front of the pictorial worlds that were discovered to him during those years follow one another. Thus narrativity with its own marks is rarely absent from Surrealism and Painting, both chronicle of the dazzled path of the author and history of the artist's renewals: a spectator in the making is confronted with works in the making" (Breton, Oeuvres complètes IV, Pléiade, p. 1254) Restored spine and edges of cover chipped. Two leaves of the illustration sections restored in the margins, without affecting the reproduction.
