René CHAR.
Le Rempart de brindilles, with original engravings by Wifredo Lam. Paris, Louis Broder, 1953. Large in-8: paperback, paperback cover. First edition. First volume of the collection "Écrits et gravures". "Although they had met before and during the war [...], it was in May 1947 or 1948 that René Char, entering Pierre Loeb's gallery, saw Wifredo's painting Lam [...]. Since then, Char has never ceased to love this universe where the imagination unfolds in an ease of drawing tempered by the greyness of the tones, which was admired by Picasso" (Antoine Coron, René Char, p. 225). Le Rempart de brindilles is the first illustrated book born of this encounter, if we exclude the manuscript of Á la santé du serpent illuminated by the painter in 1951-1952. Limited edition of 150 copies on Rives vellum: one of the 30 chapel copies, without the etchings, reserved for the author (n° RC 25). Instead of illustrations, it offers four autographed verses by René Char, taken from the poem Le Risque et la pendule, published in Poèmes des deux années 1953-1954. Personal copy of the publisher Louis Broder, enriched with an autograph letter signed on the false title: To Louis Broder this messenger who also bears his name. René Char 16 January 1954 It also includes: - an original aquatint (207 x 154 mm) by Wifredo Lam, not justified nor signed; - an original photograph showing Wifredo Lam in his studio, with the dedication signed in red pencil on the reverse: "Pour Broder avec toute/mon amitié/Wifredo Lam, Paris, 1953"; - a postcard showing two Guarao Indians in the Orinoco forest, addressed by Wifredo Lam to Louis Broder from Caracas, December 1955. He sends him his best wishes for 1956 and announces the continuation of his stay in Latin America. A second copy of the same work, which belonged to Louis Broder, containing the illustrations and bound by Semet et Plumelle, is known. (Coron, René Char, 2007, n° 181.)
