Jacqueline LAMBA. - Lot 194
Jacqueline LAMBA. Untitled. Undated [ca. 1942-1945]. Charcoal and pastel on paper, signed on the back (48 x 37 cm). Original drawing by Jacqueline Lamba. Second wife of André Breton, Jacqueline Lamba (1910-1993) "was the inspiration not only for L'Amour fou but also for a large number of poems such as L'Air de l'eau, Pleine Marge, Fata Morgana. She is also, let us say at the outset, an immense painter who deserves to be revealed to the general public" (André Breton Dictionary, p. 583). Indeed, the painter has often been neglected in favour of the writer's inspirational companion. In the autumn of 1942, she separated from him to settle down with David Hare, editor of the magazine VVV, who was now free to devote herself to her own creation: at this time, she "produced her 'prismatic paintings', automatic works, very close to the work of Masson and Matta, some of which are reproduced in VVV and which develop an interesting abstract vision of surrealism" (Les Surréalistes en exil, p. 323). This composition dates from these years; it is close to C'est le printemps, malgré tout (1942). The only work by Jacqueline Lamba exhibited in La Révolution surréaliste, the exhibition at the Centre Pompidou in 2002 (p. 437 and reproduction on p. 320 of the catalogue: the drawing is dated 1943).
