Dorothea TANNING.
The 7 Spectral Perils. Original color lithographs by Dorothea Tanning. Pourquoi rester muets? by A. Pieyre de Mandiargues. Paris, Librairie Les Pas Perdus, 1950. Album in-folio in sheets: publisher's portfolio illustrated in black, red cloth spine, remains of black silk lace. First edition: album of seven original lithographs in colour by Dorothea Tanning. The portfolio is also decorated with an original lithograph, printed in blue. Limited edition of 50 copies on Rives wove paper. One of 5 artist's copies (no. 3), signed by the painter. All prints are signed by Dorothea Tanning and justified as "épreuves d'artiste". "My first lithograph adventure has become a book. An album with seven perils in it. Because to the seven deadly sins I preferred the seven spectral perils, life being more perilous than sinful. The writer, a good judge of both, naturally agreed. You might say that these interrogate the stone. And the stone, like an oracle, answered sometimes with effects never possible to achieve with other materials. The book's cover was also a lithograph printed on a blue paper that, alas, soon discolored" (Dorothea Tanning: Hail Delirium! A Catalogue Raisonné of the Artist's Illustrated Books and Prints, 1942-1991, The New York Public Library, 1992, p. 89). Publisher's very worn portfolio.
