Two large volumes in-8, contemporary bindings in bottle-green half-chagrin, double gilt fillet on the boards, spine ribbed and decorated, first cover of volume I preserved, white embossed moire endpapers, gilt edges. First edition. Frontispiece, 211 wood-engraved plates out of the text, almost all of them after Gavarni (four after Bertall), and nearly 800 vignettes also wood-engraved in the text A fine copy, preserved very fresh in its first binding, practically free of foxing, a rare condition. The illustrated front cover of volume I has exceptionally been preserved at the time in its very rare first printing at the date of 1845.
