THE FIRST OF THESE IS THE FIRST OF A SERIES OF ARTICLES ON THE SUBJECT OF "THE WORLD'S MOST BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE. Moeurs, usages et costumes, by MM. Manuel de Cuendias and V. de Féréal; illustrations by Célestin Nanteuil. Paris, Librairie ethnographique, 1848. In-8, contemporary binding in full bottle-green chagrin, multiple frames of gilt fillets and garlands with corner fleurons on the boards, spine ribbed and decorated in the same way, inner lace, white embossed moire endpapers, gilt edges (C. Magnier). First edition. 100 woodcuts in the text and 51 plates out of the text also engraved on wood, among which 26 drawn on a tinted background, including a portrait of Queen Isabella, and 25 on white, types and costumes, remarkably coloured with gum highlights. A superb copy in a full decorated contemporary binding signed by Charles Magnier. Some minor foxing. Unidentified gilt numeral in the center of the first cover of the binding. Small longitudinal trace not very annoying due to a defect of the skin on the second plate.
