FLORIAN (Jean-Pierre Claris de).
Fables, illustrated by Victor Adam, preceded by a notice by Charles Nodier and an essay on the fable. Paris, Delloye, Desmé et Cie, 1838. Large in-8, contemporary binding in red chagrin, rocaille decoration covering the boards with gold and cold arabesque frames and a large central motif, long spine decorated in the same way, inner lace, gilt edges (Susse). First edition. Frontispiece and 110 copper-engraved plates after Victor Adam. Woodcut headpieces, lettering and footnotes for each fable. The copy presents all the remarks of the first edition mentioned by Vicaire (III, 743-44) and Carteret (III, p. 237), with the exception of the frontispiece, which is that of the reprint. A very rare copy printed on strong vellum paper, with all the plates printed on chine, a state not described by the bibliographers. We have found only one other copy containing the edition of the figures on chine (without precision as to the paper), that of the Béraldi sale (III, 1934, n° 147), in a binding apparently identical to ours (reproduction of the spine only, page 51 of the catalogue) but advertised in green. A superb copy in a full contemporary binding with rich rocaille decoration, of the most perfect freshness, bearing the rare signature of Susse, place de la Bourse in Paris (Flety, 165).
