FLORIAN (Jean-Pierre Claris de).
Fables, illustrated by J.J. Grandville, followed by Tobie et de Ruth, Poëmes tirés de l'Ecriture Sainte, et précédées d'une notice sur la vie et les ouvrages de Florian, par P.-J. Stahl. Paris, Dubochet et Cie, 1842. Large in-8, half red morocco with corners, spine decorated with nerves, illustrated cover and spine preserved (V. Champs). First edition (?). Frontispiece, 79 plates out of the text and 25 vignettes in the text, all wood-engraved after Grandville. The verse Dans l' instant le coq orgueilleux is here at the bottom of page 207, a mark of first printing according to Brivois (151), of second according to Carteret (III, 238) and Vicaire (III, 746). However according to Vicaire and Brivois the second edition, almost identical to the first, would bear on the title the date of 1843 (which is not the case of the present copy, well dated 1842). Beautiful copy, with its covers in perfect condition, except for a small restored lack at the top of the spine.
