Adventures of Robinson Crusoe. New translation. Edition illustrated by Grandville. Paris, Fournier aîné, 1840. Large in-8, contemporary binding in green chagrin, finely executed rocaille iron framing with stippling on the boards, spine ribbed and decorated in the same way, interior framing of seven gilt filets, lining and endpapers in red moire framed with a gilt fillet with corner fleurons, gilt edges (Capé). First edition. Woodcut frontispiece by Bréviaire after Grandville and French drawn on chine volant, 40 plates out of text and numerous woodcut vignettes in the text, all after Grandville. A magnificent copy, preserved as new, covered in the period by Capé with a binding with an original and very elegant decoration, executed with the utmost finesse. Exceptional in such a beautiful binding, signed by a master of the period.
