Large in-8, in leaves under covers, illustrated buff general cover and spine preserved, in a burgundy half-maroquin box with corners, spine with ornamented faux-nerve. First edition. First illustrated edition, decorated with 60 very beautiful wood-engraved plates by Gustave Doré. Very rare copy perfectly preserved in its deliveries, as issued, partly uncut. It is complete with its general cover (with the address of 13, rue de Grenelle, condition not reported by bibliographers) and its sixty issues with their covers in perfect condition, each containing a plate protected by a pink silk serpente. Attached two portraits of Théophile Gautier, one, a portrait charge, woodcut after Mailly, printed on chine volant, the other engraved on metal by Cattelain after a photograph by Pierre Petit.
