The Faust. A revised and complete translation, preceded by an essay on Goethe by Mr. H. Blaze. Illustrated edition by M. Tony Johannot. Paris, Dutertre, Michel Lévy frères, 1847. Large in-8, red morocco, on the boards double framed with three gilt fillets and a cold fillet, the inner framing curving at the four corners and on the sides to leave room for large gilt designs with small irons, spine decorated with the same, inner framing with six gilt fillets, lining and endpapers of green moire, edges gilt on witnesses, illustrated cover and spine preserved, folder, case (Canape). First edition. Portrait of Goethe after Carl Mayer on chine appliqué, vignette on the title and nine etchings outside the text after Tony Johannot also on chine appliqué with title and captions in grey letters. "Sought-after work, rare to find in beautiful condition with the cover" (Carteret). Superb copy, quoted by Carteret, bound in booklet and in mint condition, one of the very few containing the portrait and the plates in double state, on chine and on large chine, the figures of Johannot with and before the letter and the signature of the artists.
