GOETHE (Johann Wolfgang von).
Werther. New translation, preceded by considerations on Werther, and in general on the poetry of our time by Pierre Leroux. Accompanied by a preface by George Sand. Eaux-fortes by Tony Johannot. Paris, Hetzel, 1845. Large in-8, half aubergine morocco with corners, spine ribbed and decorated, gilt head, untrimmed, white cover decorated with a vignette and spine preserved (V. Champs). First edition. Two wood-engraved vignettes, one on the title, and ten out-of-text etchings drawn and engraved by Tony Johannot, printed before the letter on chine appliqué. "Rare book in beautiful condition" (Carteret, III, 269). A very fine copy, bound in booklet, enriched with four delightful original unsigned watercolours of the illustrations. These very fine watercolours have been delicately executed in bistre wash in the same direction as the corresponding engravings. They have been carefully mounted on blank sheets to be bound in the copy.
