Le Vicaire de Wakefield (The Vicar of Wakefield), translated into French with the English text opposite, by Charles Nodier; preceded by a Notice by the same on the life and works of Goldsmith, and followed by some notes. Paris, Bourgueleret, 1838. In-8, long-grained green morocco, richly framed on the boards with a gilt garland and fillets with corner fleurons and a large central diamond-shaped motif gilt in small irons, spine decorated in the same way, large inside return decorated with gilt fillets and rolls, blue illustrated cover and spine preserved, untrimmed (Mercier sr. de Cuzin) First edition of Charles Nodier's translation and first printing of the illustration. Frontispiece with the author's portrait woodcut on Chine collé, 10 out-of-text figures by Tony Johannot engraved on steel protected by a sheet of tissue paper bearing the printed caption, and about 100 woodcut vignettes in the text. A superb copy, one of the very few containing the figures in double state, on white paper and on chine glue, bound in pamphlet with its cover preserved in perfect condition, covered with a rich binding by Mercier.
