The Vicar of Wakefield. New translation by Charles Nodier, with a notice by the same on the life and works of Goldsmith. Vignettes by Tony Johannot. Paris, Hetzel, 1844. Large in-8, long-grained purple half-maroquin with corners, spine richly decorated and mosaiced with lavaliere maroquin, untrimmed, illustrated cover and spine preserved (Noulhac). First edition. Reprint of the 1838 edition (see previous issue), illustrated as it was with 10 plates out of text after Tony Johannot, here regrafted on steel by Revel and framed with a fillet. The woodcut vignettes of the 1838 edition have been removed. A very fine and scarce copy with the figures in double state, on white paper and on chine collé, in perfect condition. From the Victor Mercier library (II, 1937, n° 1260) with ex-libris.
