GRANDVILLE (Jean-Jacques Isidore Gérard, dit J.J.)
Another world. Transformations, visions, incarnations, ascensions, locomotions, explorations...and other things. Paris, Fournier, 1844. Large in-8, contemporary binding in red morocco, on the boards cold decoration with large central motif of interlacing with simple fillet in a double framing with bold and thin fillet, spine with nerves decorated in the same way, interior roulette, gilt edges (Capé). First edition and first printing. Black frontispiece, 36 coloured plates out of text and 146 woodcuts in the text, some of them full-page after Grandville. Text by Taxile Delord. One of Grandville's most astonishing works, composed and illustrated in a surrealist vein. An exceptional copy in new condition, without any freckling, in full contemporary morocco signed by one of the greatest bookbinders of the time, Charles Capé, a condition of the greatest rarity. It comes from Grandville's family who had kept it since the beginning and from whom it was acquired, in 1984, by the Giraud-Badin bookstore (certificate of the expert Dominique Courvoisier attached).
