HISTORIAL DU JONGLEUR (L'). French chronicles... - Lot 119 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
HISTORIAL DU JONGLEUR (L'). French chronicles and legends, published by MM. Ferdinand Langlé and Emile Morice. Paris, Firmin Didot's bookshop, 1829. In-8, contemporary binding in aubergine glazed calf, beautiful cold embossed plate in a frame of two gilt fillets on the boards, spine ribbed and decorated with gilt fleurons, inner lace, untrimmed. First edition of this collection of medieval tales, printed in gothic script. Vignettes by Henri Monnier and Eugène Lami, lettering and ornaments imitated from medieval manuscripts, all woodcut in the first edition. A superb copy with carefully illuminated vignettes, ornaments and lettering in colour and gold, covered with a remarkable embossed binding. Possibly the Descamps-Scrive copy (II, 1925, n° 356) cited by Carteret (III, p. 294). The binding's colour is slightly faded at the edges of the boards. Small retouch, almost invisible, on the lower corner of the second plate.
