Notre-Dame de Paris. Paris, Perrotin, 1844. Large in-8, contemporary binding in midnight blue chagrin, boards decorated with a frame of gilt and cold-stamped fillets with large gilt motifs at the corners, smooth spine decorated with rocaille motifs, interior frame decorated with gilt fillets, white moiré silk lining and endpapers, gilt edges, case. First edition. 55 plates out of text, including an engraved title, that is to say 21 engraved on steel and 34 on wood after drawings by Edouard de Beaumont, Boulanger, Daubigny, Tony Johannot, Lemud, Meissonier, Roqueplan, Rudder and Steinheil. Numerous woodcuts in the text. The copy conforms well to the first edition remarks reported by Carteret. The plate Audience au grand Châtelet is in the very rare condition with the fault Audience; Paris à vol d'oiseau is with the caption in small capitals. The most beautiful illustrated edition of this famous novel. "Remarkable publication, rare in fine condition, which may be sought after as the prototype of the great illustrated text by the artists of its time" (Carteret, III, p. 304). An exceptional copy, free of foxing and of the most perfect freshness, in an attractive contemporary decorated binding.
