Large in-8, half brown morocco with corners, smooth spine decorated with gilt cathedral motifs, untrimmed, yellow illustrated cover and spine preserved (Champs). First edition. 55 plates hors texte, including an engraved title, that is 21 engraved on steel and 34 on wood after drawings by Edouard de Beaumont, Boulanger, Daubigny, Tony Johannot, Lemud, Meissonier, Roqueplan, Rudder and Steinheil. Numerous woodcuts in the text. The plate Paris as the crow flies is with the legend in small capitals. The most beautiful illustrated edition of this famous novel. "Remarkable publication, rare in fine condition, which may be sought after as the prototype of the great text illustrated by the artists of its time" (Carteret, III, p. 304).
