L'âne mort. Edition illustrated by Tony Johannot. Paris, Bourdin, 1842. Large in-8, long-grained purple morocco, multiple framings of gilt and cold-engraved fillets and fleurons on the boards, spine ribbed and decorated in the same way, large inner return decorated with gilt fillets and fleurons, lining and endpapers of white moire, edges gilt on witnesses (Mercier, sr de son père, 1911). First illustrated edition and first printing of the illustration. Steel-engraved portrait of the author, 12 plates out of text and some 100 wood-engraved vignettes in the text after Tony Johannot. A magnificent copy, one of the very few printed on China paper preserved in new condition, richly bound by mercier fils. Copy quoted by Carteret (III, p. 314: "état de neuf"), from the libraries of the princes Demidoff with stamp of the library of San Donato at the bottom of the title and Paul Gavault (I, 1913, n° 328), who probably had the binding done by Mercier himself
