JANIN (Jules).
L'âne mort. Edition illustrated by Tony Johannot. Paris, Bourdin 1842. Large in-8, lavaliere half-maroquin with corners, spine decorated with gilt scrolls and fleurons, untrimmed, cover illustrated in gold with a portrait of a woman in an arabesque frame and spine preserved (Mercier, sr de Cuzin). First illustrated edition and first printing of the illustration. Steel-engraved portrait of the author, 12 plates printed on a tinted background and some 100 wood-engraved vignettes in the text after Tony Johannot. A very fine copy, bound in booklet form, with its remarkable white glossy cover printed in gold and impeccably preserved, exceptionally enriched with: - two states of an unsuccessful cover design, in which the portrait of a woman on the general cover is surrounded by a superb historiated border drawn by Tony Johannot, a composition that has remained unpublished; - 54 fume plates of the illustrations (nine of which are double copies), bound in their place in the volume, prints of exceptional quality. There are 6 of the 12 large-format hors texte prints. Nine of these artist's proofs bear the pencil signature of Tony Johannot, some with a few annotations, one the signature of the publisher Bourdin; - three different illustrated prospectuses. Copy cited by Carteret (III, p. 314), from the libraries of Paul Villeboeuf with bookplate and gilt monogram on the first flyleaf, and Pierre Duché (1972, no. 84, oddly erroneously announced on chine in the catalogue), with bookplate.
