JARDIN DES PLANTES (Le), description complète, historique et pittoresque du Muséum d'histoire naturelle, de la Ménagerie, des Serres, des Galeries de minéralogie et d'anatomie, et de la Vallée suisse [...] by MM. P. Bernard, L. Couailhac, Gervais and Emm. Lemaout [...] - LE JARDIN DES PLANTES, description complète, historique et pittoresque du Muséum d'histoire naturelle (oiseaux, reptiles, poissons, insectes et crustacés) par le docteur Emm. Lemaout. Second part. Paris, Curmer, 1842-43. Two parts in two large volumes in-8, half brown morocco with corners, spines decorated, untrimmed, printed covers and spine preserved (G. Mercier, sr de son père, 1923). First edition. Considerable publication, very rarely complete, illustrated with 182 steel-engraved (65) and wood-engraved (117) plates after Féart, Marvy, Jacque, Daubigny, Beaucé, Delacroix, etc., of which 32 finely coloured at the time, the latter essentially on ornithological and botanical subjects, some after Descourtilz. Numerous woodcut vignettes in the text. A superb copy from the Jules Brivois collection, preserved at all margins and absolutely complete. It contains notably the six general covers (for the first and second parts and for the illustrations delivered separately) with spines, as well as the alphabetical table of the names of the trees and shrubs planted in the two labyrinths printed on fine paper, a piece mentioned by Vicaire (I, 430) according to the copy of the Bibliothèque nationale. It is further enriched by: - 31 (out of 32?) covers of volume I; - 5 edition prospectuses; - a printed open letter (4 pages) from the publisher J.-J. Dubochet to Léon Curmer; - the reply of the latter (4 pages) accompanied by the judgment of the Royal Court of Paris of 21 December 1841; - the Judgment of the Commercial Court of the Seine of 15 September 1841 in favour of Léon Curmer against Messrs. Dubochet et Cie, one sheet printed on yellow paper. These last three documents concern the lawsuit brought against Curmer by Dubochet, who had registered the title of his publication Le jardin des plantes (by Boitard, n° 31 of the present catalogue) with the Direction de la librairie before Curmer. It is the latter who will finally win the case. Note in pencil by the bookseller Marc Lolliée on the first endpaper: "magnificent copy from the Brivois library", from the libraries of Jules Brivois (1920, n° 671, then unbound) and Laurent Meeûs (Wittock, n° 236).
