[KEEPSAKE] Paris illustrations. Album of... - Lot 145 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
[KEEPSAKE] Paris illustrations. Album of engravings by the first artists of France, with texts, verse pieces, short stories, etc., by MM. de Chateaubriand, Béranger, V. Hugo, J. Janin, E. Sue, F. Soulié, etc. Paris, Pourrat frères, 1838. In-8, contemporary red chagrin, boards and spine decorated with a rich rocaille gilt and cold decoration, edges gilt. First edition. Title-frontispice with vignette and 24 steel-engraved hors-texte plates protected by captions on silk paper, most of them after David, Marckl and Raffet. (Carteret, III, p. 336 indicates only 23 plates). Woodcut headpieces and footnotes for each chapter. A delightful work, very finely engraved, a model of its kind. A very fine copy, in a delightful decorated contemporary binding, as new. From the libraries of Charles Lormier, founder in 1863 of the Société des Bibliophiles Normands, with his bookplate with the motto Vita sine litteris mors est, Alexis Rouart, and Etienne Beauvillain, also with bookplate.
