Fables. Edition illustrated by J. David, accompanied by a historical note and notes, by le Bon Walckenaer. Paris, Aubrée, s.d. (1837-38). Two large volumes in-8, midnight blue half morocco with corners, spines decorated, untrimmed, illustrated cover and spine preserved (Mercier sr de Cuzin). First edition. Two coloured frontispieces with gold highlights, steel-engraved portrait by Choubard and about 400 woodcut vignettes in the text. A very fine copy, bound in pamphlet, in superb condition, containing: - the portrait in two states, before and with the letter, both on chine monté; - the very fine suite of 12 faux-titres by Schall and Laisné and 12 vignettes hors texte by Grenier, Laville, Tony Johannot, etc., delivered with the second sale of the book (cf. Carteret, III, p. 357); - two delivery covers; - the illustrated prospectus, 2 pages. Frontispieces of the two volumes reversed. From the library of Antoine Vautier (I, 1971, no. 98), with bookplate and collation note in pencil in his hand.
