LA FONTAINE (Jean de).
Fables. Illustrated edition by J.J. Grandville. Paris, Fournier aîné, Perrotin, 1838 - (1840). Two volumes in-8, contemporary binding in aubergine half-chagrin, spine ribbed and decorated with gilt fillets and fleurons, gilt head, edges in colour. First printing. Two different wood-engraved frontispieces after Grandville and French woodcut on chine volant, 14 ornate faux-titres and 240 woodcut plates after Grandville; headpieces, lettering and endpapers. An exceptional copy preserved in its original binding without any foxing and complete with the 240 plates drawn by Grandville for this work, all printed here on chine appliqué. In 1840, due to the success of the edition, Grandville had added to the 120 plates of the 1838 edition 120 new plates, which are the "indispensable complement" (Carteret, III, p. 359), thus forming a "set of the greatest rarity when it is of first edition", a fortiori printed as here on chine appliqué. Unidentified SB gilt figure on the first boards.
