Large in-8, publisher's binding in mauve chagrin decorated on the boards and spine with a sumptuous gilt cathedral decoration, interior lace, gilt edges. First edition. Twelve plates out of text under silk paper serpents, eleven of them bearing the printed caption, ten title-frontispices, headpieces and footnotes, all wood-engraved after Marckl. Portrait of Lamartine engraved on steel by Hopwood after Dupont and three figures also on steel, one of which by Tony Johannot added. A superb copy in its remarkable publisher's binding, very fresh. From the library of Léopold Carteret with autograph note in his hand on a flyleaf.
