LAURENT DE L'ARDÈCHE (Paul-Mathieu).
Histoire de l'empereur Napoléon, illustrated by Horace Vernet. Paris, Dubochet et Cie, 1839. Large in-8, contemporary binding in green chagrin, important gilt decoration on the covers consisting of straight and curved gilt fillets drawing compartments inside which are pushed with small irons of rich azure scrolls in a fine stippled pattern; in the centre of the first plate the crowned imperial eagle, on the lower plate imperial attributes, hat, sceptre, sword, spine decorated in the same way with large crowned N, inner scroll, gilt edges, slipcase (Schavye, 1841). First edition. Frontispiece and 500 wood-engraved vignettes in the text after Horace Vernet. Superb and very rare copy covered with a magnificent decorated binding strictly of the period signed by Schavye. The important Brussels bookbinder Pierre-Corneille Schavye has here, in a very unusual way, signed his work in the hollow of the lower and upper covers. From the libraries of Laurent Meeus (Wittock, n° 361) and Roudinesco (I, 1967, n° 81), with their bookplates.
