LAURENT DE L'ARDÈCHE (Paul-Mathieu).
Histoire de l'empereur Napoléon, illustrée par Horace Vernet. Paris, Dubochet et Cie, 1843. Large in-8, publisher's binding in midnight blue chagrin, on the boards and on the spine rich gilt decoration with rocaille irons and imperial attributes, crowned eagle in the centre of the two boards, inner lace, gilt edges. Two frontispieces, one by Clerget, the other (Statue of the Emperor) by Horace Vernet, a portrait of Napoleon engraved on steel by Hopwood, 500 wood-engraved vignettes in the text after Horace Vernet, a copper-engraved plate representing the emperor in coronation costume and 51 plates of military costumes after Bellangé wood-engraved and finely coloured with gum highlights. A copy of the 1840 edition with a relay title with the date of 1843, containing, in addition to the 44 plates of coloured military costumes usually attached to this second edition, 7 new plates by Bellangé, also coloured, completing the suite, plates not mentioned in the table, as well as a black copper-engraved plate depicting the coronation, all in the first edition. The frontispiece by Vernet showing the statue of the emperor on horseback is here coloured. Superb publisher's full chagrin binding, richly decorated and very fresh.
