LESAGE (Alain-René).
Le diable boiteux, illustré par Tony Johannot, précédé d'une notice sur Le Sage, par M. Jules Janin. Paris, Ernest Bourdin et Cie, 1840. Large in-8, contemporary binding in red half-maroquin with corners, spine ribbed and decorated with gilt fleurons and dots, gilt head, untrimmed, illustrated cover preserved (Lardière) Portrait-frontispiece of the lame devil engraved by Brévière on chine collé and 140 woodcut vignettes in the text after Tony Johannot. A fine and very rare copy bound in its original cover. The particular quality of this cover, illustrated with a large composition not reproduced in the book showing two characters mounted on a ladder to paste the poster of the Limping Devil under the latter's mocking gaze, undoubtedly explains this unusual and judicious choice by the excellent bookbinder Lardière.
