Histoire de Gil Blas de Santillane. Vignettes by Jean Gigoux. Paris, Paulin, 1835. Large in-8, long-grained red morocco, triple framed with gilt filets with corner fleurons on the boards, spine decorated throughout, large inner garland in a frame of full and dotted gilt filets, lining and endpapers of salmon moire, gilt edges, folder, case (Mercier, Sr de Cuzin). First edition. Frontispiece, portrait of Gil Blas and some 600 woodcut vignettes in the text after Jean Gigoux. Famous edition, which marks the renovation of wood engraving in the Romantic period. Superb copy cited by Carteret, one of the very few on China paper. Two minor pips on the false title and on the back of the frontispiece. From the library of Antoine Vautier (I, 1971, n° 109) with bookplate and mention of collation in pencil.
