LESAGE (Alain-René).
History of Gil Blas de Santillane. Vignettes by Jean Gigoux. Paris, Paulin, 1835. Large in-8, half brown long-grained morocco with corners, smooth spine decorated with mosaic listels in lavaliered morocco enhanced with gilt stippling and fleurons, illustrated cover and spine preserved (Mercier, sr de son père, 1913) First edition. Frontispiece, portrait of Gil Blas and some 600 wood-engraved vignettes in the text after Jean Gigoux. One of the very rare copies with a trembling fillet, i.e. with the false title, the frontispiece and the title framed by a double fillet in the form of a rounded Greek. This "attempt, without any doubt, which will have been abandoned at the time of printing" (Carteret, III, p. 384) could be the sign of the first printed copies. A very fine copy, impeccably preserved with its illustrated cover in mint condition, in a mosaic binding by Mercier fils. It belonged to the bookseller and bibliographer Léopold Carteret who wrote this note in ink on a flyleaf: "Superb copy of the first printing with the trembled fillets of the beginning, preserved with an exceptional freshness, not washed, not glued. Carteret". Also from the Alfred Clericeau library with bookplate. Label of the Simonson bookshop.
