Large in-8, long-grained red morocco, multiple sets of gilt fillets with lateral fleurons and important corner motifs framing the boards, large interior return decorated with a gilt garland framed with fillets, gilt edges on witnesses, double covers and spine preserved, slipcase (Chambolle-Duru) Text only of the Lazarille published as a supplement to the 1846 edition of Lesage's Gil Blas and forming in this edition a separate part, with title, particular pagination and special illustration by Meissonier. First edition of the eleven remarkable woodcut vignettes after Meissonier. A superb and precious copy from the Descamps-Scrive library, quoted by Carteret, containing the china fumés of all the illustrations: "We have had the good fortune to have in our hands two collections of fumés of these admirable woods, engraved by the famous Lavoignat; one of these collections has been in the Descamps-Scrive library; it constitutes a fine achievement of art" (Carteret, III, p. 386). In addition to the general white cover of the edition illustrated with vignettes by Jean Gigoux and Meissonier, the copy is accompanied by the cloth cover with special irons used for the publisher's cartonnages, complete with its richly decorated spine. An exceptional copy, superbly bound by Chambolle-Duru. From the libraries of René Descamps-Scrive (II, 1925, n° 246), Charles Van der Rest (1964, n° 67) and Sam Clapp (2002, n° 535).
