NORVINS (Jacques Marquet de Montbreton, baron de). History of Napoleon. Vignettes by Raffet. Paris, Furne et Cie, 1839. Large in-8, long-grained empire green morocco, on the boards a large gilt frame formed by a garland of volutes surrounded by multiple fillets intersecting in the corners with interior and exterior fleurons, large interior return decorated with gilt, bold, lean and stippled fillets surrounding a garland of palmettes, gilt head, gilt edges on witnesses, cover illustrated with the imperial eagle and spine preserved, case (Mercier, sr. de son père, 1916). First edition. Frontispiece engraved on steel by Burdet and 80 wood-engraved hors texte compositions, all after Raffet; numerous vignettes in the text. "This very beautiful book, one of the headpieces of the 19th century, is rightly sought after for Raffet's beautiful illustrations" (Carteret, III, p. 439). A superb copy, with its pretty pink cover preserved in mint condition, sumptuously bound in pamphlet by Mercier. It is well complete with the rare unpaginated leaf of Avis au relieur for the placement of the engravings, which is mostly missing and has been enriched with: - 16 delivery covers; - a Notice to subscribers butterfly concerning a delay in the delivery of the vignettes; - a very fine original drawing signed by Raffet (18,7 x 10,5 mm) in ink and bistre wash on strong paper (flyleaf), depicting a hussar on horseback; monogram H.G. in red in the lower right corner. From the Albert Dubosc library (1874 - 1956) who had the copy bound by Mercier, with his bookplate in gilt letters in the lining.
