PELLICO (Silvio). Paris, Delloye; Garnier, 1844 Large in-8, midnight blue long-grained morocco, on the boards, wide framing of multiple fillets, straight and curved, full and dotted, gold and cold, with corner fleurons, the whole delimiting compartments decorated with mosaic palmettes of red and lavaliere morocco, spine ribbed and decorated in the same way, gilt edges on witnesses, illustrated cover preserved, case (Mercier sr de Cuzin). First edition. Portrait, frontispiece and numerous steel-engraved vignettes in the text (some on wood) after notably Daubigny, Steinheil and Gérard-Séguin. "One of the most beautiful illustrated books of the 19th century (Carteret, III, p. 460)", considered one of the masterpieces of steel engraving in the Romantic period, on a par with the Chants et chansons populaires de la France and the 1838 Peau de chagrin, all three published by the publisher Delloye. A superb copy, cited by Carteret, covered with a rich mosaic binding by Mercier. The general cover, "extremely rare" (Carteret), illustrated with a large engraved composition by Lavoignat, is preserved here as new (without the spine). From the libraries of Eugène Solacroup (1925, n° 185) with his monogram in gilt letters on a flyleaf and Robert Beauvillain with ex-libris.
