Large in-8, red half-maroquin with corners, spine ribbed and decorated in the boxes with gilt fillets and corner fleurons, untrimmed, illustrated cover and spine preserved (Mercier sr de Cuzin). First edition. Frontispiece, 14 plates out of text and about one hundred wood-engraved vignettes in the text after Gustave Doré. One of the first and best illustrations by Gustave Doré, which preludes in the same spirit the Contes drôlatiques published the following year. Superb copy, bound in pamphlet form, with its very beautiful and fragile general white illustrated cover printed in red, green and gold, "very rare in good condition" (Carteret, III, p. 511), preserved, complete with spine, in mint condition. It is enriched by: - six of the seven covers of the series (without the 6th), each illustrated with a different vignette; - four smoked copies on chine, for the woodcuts on pages 33 (mounted on cardboard), 68, 77 and the plate opposite page 84. From the libraries of Antoine Vautier (I, 1971, n° 145) and Henri Bonasse (1982, n° 77), with their bookplates.
