Two volumes in-folio, publisher's red cloth boards, first plates decorated, in a cold frame, with a large gilt plaque signed by Paul Souze, engraved after a drawing by Doré; second plates decorated in cold; spine decorated with a gilt plaque with a character motif bearing the title. Portrait, 60 plates out of text and more than 650 woodcut illustrations in the text after Gustave Doré (of which 98 from the De Bry edition and 7 from Contes drolatiques). Second edition, second printing of the illustrations after that of 1873. "One of the most beautiful books by Gustave Doré" (Carteret, III, p. 511), decorated with an "incomparable suite of magnificent drawings" (Leblanc. Catalogue de l'oeuvre de Gustave Doré). A very fine copy in its beautiful preserved cardboard of the most perfect freshness, with the engravings in a very fine edition.
