REYBAUD (LOUIS).
Jérôme Paturot à la recherche de la meilleure des Républiques. Edition illustrated by Tony Johannot. Paris, Michel Lévy frères, 1849. Large in-8, red morocco decorated with a triple set of straight, curved and broken gilt fillets with corner fleurons, spine ribbed and decorated, inside return decorated with six gilt fillets, gilt edges on witnesses, illustrated cover preserved (Marius Michel). First edition (despite the vignette with the three characters on the title page and the accents on the printer's name, see note to number 253). 30 hors texte including the frontispiece and about 160 woodcut vignettes after Tony Johannot. An exceptional copy, probably the only one of its kind, enriched by the magnificent quality smoke prints on chine of 158 of the woodcuts, including the one on the cover, i.e. the vast majority of the illustrations. All these proofs, printed on chine appliqué, some, among the largest, on large chine, have been bound in their place in the copy. Cover printed by Dondey-Dupré, possibly a second edition (see previous issue). From the library of Pierre Duché with ex-libris.
